2017 BENEFICIARIES

Jumpstart Northern California

https://www.jstart.org/where/northern-california

Jumpstart is a national early education organization that recruits and trains college students and community Corps members to serve preschool children in low-income neighborhoods. Our proven curriculum helps children develop the language and literacy skills they need to be ready for kindergarten, setting them on a path to close the achievement gap before it is too late.

When Jumpstart Northern California launched in 1999, we served just 100 children in underserved neighborhoods in San Francisco. With the help and generosity of our supporters, our region continues to grow and inspire children to learn, college students to teach, families to become involved in their children's education, and communities to progress together.

During the school year, more than 780 preschool children throughout the San Francisco Bay Area, who are most at risk of school failure, join 200 college Corps members to grow and learn together in Jumpstart sessions. And it’s proven that our programs work: 95% of children served by Jumpstart Northern California make gains in key kindergarten-readiness skills over the school year, preparing them to succeed in school and in life.

As the only program of its kind, Jumpstart infuses the community with a new generation of dedicated and well-trained teachers; after serving with Jumpstart, 94% of Northern California college Corps members indicate that they intend to pursue careers in education or public service.

Our perimeter of services includes, but are not limited to: Mental Services, Financial Planning, legal Assistance, Real Estate Home Sale and Home Purchase Assistance, Financing, Rental Assistance, Temporary Housing, Van Line and Do-It-Yourself moving (D.I.Y), Tuition Grants and several other concierge services. Approximately 55% of all donations we receive are used to subsidize or in some instances cover the cost of these transitional services. Approximately 25% of all donations are used to fund research for our targeted diseases. Our goal in working with our various affiliates is to raise industry standards, recognize and reward innovation and continually monitor performance and progress. We invest in those service companies and individuals that show the greatest promise in transitional support and in finding a cure for the major neurological diseases we target.

The Marine Toys for Tots Foundation, an IRS recognized 501(c)(3) not-for-profit charity, is the authorized fundraising and support organization for the Toys for Tots Program. The Foundation provides the funding and support needed for successful annual toy collection and distribution campaigns. Local campaigns are conducted annually in over 700 communities covering all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.

Local toy collection campaigns begin in October and last until mid to late December. Toy distribution also takes place mid to late December. Members of the community drop new, unwrapped toys in collection boxes positioned in local businesses. Coordinators pick up these toys and store them in central warehouses where the toys are sorted by age and gender. At Christmas, Coordinators, with the assistance of local social welfare agencies, church groups, and other local community agencies, distribute the toys to the less fortunate children of the community. Over the years, Marines have established close working relationships with social welfare agencies, churches and other local community agencies which are well qualified to identify the needy children in the community and play important roles in the distribution of the toys.

While Toys for Tots Coordinators organize, coordinate and manage the campaign, the ultimate success depends on the support of the local community and the generosity of the people who donate toys.

Local business leaders play key roles. They allow Coordinators to locate drop-off/collection boxes in their stores; provide free warehouse space for storing and sorting toys during October, November and December; provide vehicles to collect toys from drop-off sites; sponsor toy raising events; and help Coordinators arrange media exposure for Toys for Tots in the local community.

National corporations support Toys for Tots by establishing affiliations with the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation. These corporations make donations to the Foundation or conduct cause marketing initiatives from which they share royalties with the Foundation. In almost every instance, the marketing initiatives of these corporations give significant added visibility and name recognition to Toys for Tots. Such visibility enhances the campaign at the national and local levels. The funds emanating from these affiliations enable the Foundation to purchase toys to supplement local collections; purchase promotion and support materials and defray the costs of annual Toys for Tots campaigns.
